What is Candidiasis? A Brief Overview
What is commonly known to us as yeast infection is also called Candidiasis, and is caused when a rapid multiplication of fungi takes place in our body namely Candida albicans.
The places where the yeast infection mostly occurs includes: the gastrointestinal tract, stomach lining, mouth, in the vagina and also on the skin. Though yeast infections can be treated quite easily using home remedies, but in many of the severe cases a round of anti-fungal medication is needed to be used by the patient. One such medication is corticosteroid creams which have proven to be beneficial for treating the infection. But in earlier times, the doctors also recommend home remedies which included the use of apple cider vinegar for yeast infection treatment, and it was highly effective in treating patients back in those days.
Why is Apple Cider Vinegar used in treating Candidiasis?
For yeast infection apple cider vinegar or ACV has proven to be beneficial because it is a natural antibiotic and resists the growth of harmful bacteria, other viruses and disease causing micro-organism.
The pH in the vagina is kept under balance by the acidic nature of the apple cider vinegar (ACV), the pH remains acidic and the harmful yeasts are not able to survive in an acidic environment.
The immunity level of our body is raised as the apple cider vinegar increases the level of good bacteria that resides in our gut and vagina and helps us in fighting various diseases, and helps in digestion of food easily as well.
The immune system is also boosted when the ACV is taken orally and this is because of the enzymes and protein present in the vinegar. Moreover applying it topically on affected skin also helps in preventing the yeast infection in the affected area.
The blood sugar level is also kept under control using ACV as the glucose level of the blood is balanced out. Any patients having diabetes are much more prone to yeast infection, and apple cider vinegar for yeast infection is a proven solution.
A study was conducted by João Pessoa from Brazil for the Postgraduate Program in dentistry to understand the antifungal activity involved with apple cider vinegar on Candida infection in denture stomatitis. The microdilution technique was adopted to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration and fungicidal concentration. Further studies on the topic included tests of microbial kinetics and inhibition of adherence to acrylic resin, at different concentration of the product. Tests showed 4% of vinegar show minimum inhibitory concentration of 2500 μg/ml. After 30 minutes the effect increased by 4 times. It was concluded that apple cider vinegar showed antifungal properties, which can be adopted for therapeutic purpose for patients with denture stomatitis. This study just goes to show that even using a small amount (4%) of apple cider vinegar for yeast infection in the form of mouth wash, bathing, and even drinking can show good benefits for the body to fight Candida infections. Moreover, dentures wearers should look to cleanse there dentures after every meal they consume, and soak their dentures overnight.
Lot of other studies, including one from The Qua Medical University in 2011 suggest that the use of apple cider vinegar for vaginal yeast infection is highly effective, which is because of the presence of acetic acid which balances the pH of the vagina. Some experts even say that apple cider vinegar is even more effective than the antifungal drug: ‘fluconazole’.
Methods of using Apple Cider Vinegar for treating Candidiasis
Use ACV as a Drink: In a glass of lukewarm water add two to three table spoons of apple cider vinegar, and have this mixture during you meal. This will help as a good alkalizer and will prevent the yeast infection in the digestive tract of your body. This should be consumed daily for eradicating the infection. The vinegar will also help to increase the production of enzymes that are required for healthy digestion and provides much more digestive power.
Treating Athlete’s Foot using ACV as a wash: For this treatment one may use unfiltered, raw and organic apple cider vinegar, and add almost four to five tablespoons in a bucket of 2 litre water. The water has to be lukewarm. The infected area of the foot has to be soaked inside the bucket for twenty to thirty minutes. It should be then air dried and the process should be repeated daily for two weeks.
Apple cider vinegar for yeast infection can be used in regular bathing. The use of apple cider vinegar will prove to be beneficial when the temperature of the water is lukewarm. In a tub filled with water, one to two cups of apple cider vinegar should be mixed for taking the bath.
Douching with Apple Cider Vinegar: For treating a yeast infection apple cider vinegar can be mixed with tepid water and used for cleansing the vagina. This helps to reduce the irritation in the vagina. And for best results, adding half a table-spoon of tea tree oil can also be mixed in solution. The irritating cottage cheese like discharge is also reduced after using ACV.
Tampons can also be used for applying the vinegar inside the vagina. If you apply a vinegar soaked tampon into the vagina, it will help to reduce the redness and itching of the vaginal walls. The tampon should be applied for 10 to 15 minutes and then after removing the tampon, the area should be cleaned with tepid water. For treating Candida infections, apple cider vinegar for yeast infection can be a good antibiotic natural alternative for the medicines and ointments.
